The Hohe Tauern National Park is the biggest nature preserve in the Alps. It is one of the most magnificent landscapes on the face of the Earth and serves as a Noah’s Ark for thousands of animal and plant species. An island of pristine nature in the heart of Europe. Austria’s highest peaks (the Grossglockner and Grossvenediger), broad glacial expanses, alpine meadows, rock faces and waterfalls, together with a centuries-old cultural and farming tradition - all have left their distinctive mark on its appearance. The Hohe Tauern National Park also impresses with its rich variety of shapes and forms.  And from its lowest point to the summit of the Grossglockner, it spans virtually 2,600 metres in elevation.

The Hohe Tauern National Park in no way seeks to exclude mankind – quite to the contrary.  A vacation in the National Park Region promises to become a journey of discovery amid one of Europe’s most fascinating landscapes.  Wild, primal landscapes and hill farms blending seamlessly into their natural setting: These are the two faces of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Covering an area of 1800 square kilometres, it is by far the largest nature preserve in Central Europe.

Its foundations were laid, to a great extent, on private land – in itself a splendid achievement, especially at a time when, for most, an appetite for every greater financial gain is the overriding force in regional development.
